I WENT TO TD GARDEN IN A PANDEMIC AND IT WAS BETTER THAN I IMAGINED

TD Garden allowed a limited number of fans into the arena last Thursday to watch the Boston Bruins host the New York Islanders for the first live sporting event in Boston in over a year—and I was lucky enough to attend.

Although the Bruins fell to the New York Islanders 4-3 in overtime that night, the score isn’t what stuck with me. Rather, it was the experience of attending a game with new health protocols in place to limit the spread of COVID-19 and keep fans safe.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE LOSES 16-1 AGAINST WHEATON

The women’s lacrosse team recorded its second loss of the season in a 16-1 defeat against Wheaton College in a conference matchup at Nordin Field in Norton, Massachusetts on Saturday.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference to cancel the spring sports season on March 12, 2020, and a day later forced Emerson to send its students home for the remainder of the spring semester. Over a year later, sports have yet to officially make their return to Emerson.

Student-athletes were left in limbo for over a year, unsure whether their respective teams would be participating in potential 2020-21 fall, winter, and spring sports seasons.

Emerson will allow its spring sports teams to compete in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference season, the college announced in a statement on Wednesday.

The four teams impacted by the college’s decision are baseball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and softball. The tennis teams did not have enough players to compete in the season, according to head coach Aaron Bergeron.

The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Presidents Council voted to approve the NEWMAC 2020-21 spring sports season Monday.

Six Emerson teams—baseball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s tennis, and softball—will be allowed to compete in the conference this spring for the first time in a year.

The Capitals drafted forwards Connor McMichael, Brett Leason, and Aliaksei Protas along with defenseman Martin Hugo Has at the draft in Vancouver this past June in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The following weeks saw each pick attend Washington’s development camp and all three forwards ink their first NHL contracts. Since then, the four prospects have gone their separate ways to continue their development.

USA WINS GOLD AT 2021 IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

The United States won the gold medal at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship in a 2-0 win over Canada on Tuesday night in Edmonton, Alberta. The victory secured America’s first gold medal in the competition since 2017 and their fifth gold medal in tournament history.

The Boston University men’s hockey team shutout the University of Vermont Catamounts in a 3-0 win yesterday despite being outshot and spending over a third of the game on the penalty kill. The win earned BU (4-4-4, 3-3-3 Hockey East) its third win within their last nine games.

The Harvard Crimson defeated the Cornell Big Red in a 35-22 win at home in its return to Ivy League play on Saturday, Oct. 12. The victory was Harvard’s third-straight win and its ninth-straight home win against the Big Red.
